This is the first time I’ve read this author. The premise sounded like it had promise; however, I was not able to get into the story. There was too much, yet not enough going on…it’s just all over the place. There were too many genres with not enough of any one of them to be able to place this in any category. Romance, romantic suspense, paranormal, semi-religious? It's appears to be billed as a romance, however, for a romance novel, there is almost no romantic tension between the two main characters. I also didn’t feel that the dialog flowed smoothing. It seemed contrived. I really tried to get into this book, but gave up. I returned this book to . I’ve never done that before, but I just could not read this book.
WELL, okay, I am a little surprised I am reading a romance novel. I read Westerns, and action, and thrillers, and an occasional ghost story. The synapsis clip given told of a single Mom being haunted by her dead Marine husband, and another Marine trying to help. Meaghan's. MARINE is that story. It is told with humor and details included that make the characters real. The end is predictable ---but, I DID read it for enjoyment and to feel good. Mission accomplished!! The multiple setbacks slowed the romantic build -up and made the end almost anti -climatic for me. It was not a disappointment, just timed a little off, for me. It was a good read, and I did enjoy it!!!!! I give it 4 Stars!!!!!
DNF. I downloaded the book for free, but only read about half. the other reviewers mention the cowboys, the barfights, the ghosts, etc. Yes this book has a little bit of everything, and the godliness i just don't understand. But I think that what nobody's mentioned is the problem with this book is there is almost zero build up of romantic tension. They need to have a relationship. But it's not on the page. It's missing. Maybe it shows up in another fifty pages, but I'm not waiting around that long.
I liked this story, the first time I've read this author, but I felt as though the author couldn't decide what genre to fit into, so she threw something in for everyone. The resulting book feels a little schizophrenic, with too many types of "voices" trying to come through. Is it a western themed romance, a suspense theme, Christian romance, medical romance, chick lit, paranormal romance? I was never really quite sure. I don't mean that all stories must be pigeonholed, of course, but it's helpful to know where you're going and not have characters and themes jumping around unexpectedly.
Meagan the female lead character is from Texas and there are several other"Texans" thrown in for good measure-some cowboys in town for the rodeo, a friend's sister who's a barrel riding champion in the rodeo, and a big talking retiring Marine best friend, "Tex". Mitch, the male lead and retiring Marine, is from Louisiana Bayou country and his nickname is "Cajun heat", so there's a Cajun Bar and Restaurant thrown in and Mitch's good friends own it. Meagan works there as a star bar tender while attending college classes and after caring for her 4 year old son.
Mitch's sister married a doctor at the beginning of the story, so there are several medical traumas and emergencies. Meagan's fiance was killed on active duty at the same time she sent him the email with the ultrasound pictures telling him they were having a baby, so he died never knowing. Now there's a "sad man" that her son can see who haunts Meagan's house, especially her son's bedroom, all sorts of weird paranormal activity and a need to have a paranormal medium come to the house. Meagan's family and her fiance's both disowned them when they planned to marry, so she lost her faith in family and after she lost her beloved and her son was injured, she lost her faith in God, too. There are quite a lot of Christianity themes running through the entire book.
Mitch isn't sure he is ready to settle down, just having gotten his freedom after 20 years as a Marine, but he's drawn to Meagan and her son. He worries that he may have unknown, undetected PTSD and may be bad for them or may hurt them, so he tries to keep his distance, but finds himself drawn to them.
There are so many issues here but underlying is the romance of Meagan and Mitch. It gets lost in the shuffle, buried under their issues and obscured by all of the other stuff in the story, but it's there. The author plans several books revolving around the folks introduced in this story and hopefully they'll be a bit more streamlined, but I would like to know more about the further adventures of these characters. I believe the next story is about the barrel riding champion, Haley, and her Marine and the continued adventure of the relationship development between Meagan's best friend, Niki, and Tex, Mitch's best friend (also Haley's big brother).
There is a sexual scene, occasional mild profanity and some violence in this story.
