"Rip Foster Rides the Gray Planet" is a young adult science fiction novel written by Harold L. Goodwin under the pseudonym Blake Savage. Freshly graduated and commissioned Planeteer Lt. Richard Ingalls Peter ("Rip") Foster, already contending with inter-service rivalry with the Space Force (equivalent to Navy) crewmen with whom he serves, is tasked with retrieving an asteroid made of pure thorium from the asteroid belt and bringing it to Earth for use as fissionable material.
In this he is opposed by agents of the "Consolidation of Peoples Governments", who also seek control and use of the asteroid. The villains in Rip Foster are known as "Consops", agents of the "Consolidation of Planetary Governments" that the Space Force and Planeteers of the "Federation of Free Governments" oppose. It is easy to see that the nickname "Connies" is reference to "Commies", an abbreviation of "Communists", given that the book was written during the Cold War and Korean War.

I first read this book (first published by Whitman) over 50 years ago. Discovering this copy on Kindle (while searching for "Rick Brant" books--by the same author), and re-reading it, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it stood the test of time. Make no mistake, this is space-opera adventure aimed at the same youthful audience as "Rick Brant" and "The Hardy Boys," but to us older folks, it provides a glimpse of the future as it was imagined to be some 50+ years ago. The book is free so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try. One way or another, you will be transported to another time and place.Product details

Rip Foster Rides the Gray Planet (Audible Audio Edition) Harold L Goodwin Arthur Vincet Audioliterature Books Reviews
At very best this is a nostalgia read for those of us who read the original Whitman edition by "Blake Savage" sixty years ago. Balanced between Space Patrol or Tom Corbett on radio and tv or juveniles from the likes of Robert Heinlein this was a very good read in 1952. The basic premise is blasting an asteroid rich in thorium out of its orbit, with the goal of making it an artifical satellite of earth. Naturally there are two alliances on Earth with space-going military, so it is a race for time.
The hand-to-hand combat and fighter spacecraft seem very realistic, considering when this was written. For example, a combat knife for space suit fighting has a powered blade which punches out from the handle, then is retracted for the next stab. Add the "snapper boat" space fighters, so-called because direction change under power would snap the pilot around. It seemed pretty powerful back then.
I cannot predict what young people today might think of this because they have a profoundly different background. In 1952 the antique idea books were the orignal Tom Swift airplane and submarine type adventures. We could read and tolerate those. I am out of touch with ten-year-old boys, but my grand-daughter who is not yet ten is reading Harry Potter 7.
It should be worth a try for the right kid or old kid.
