The Smoke Thief The Drakon Book 1 Shana Abé 9780553588040 Books

The plot feels like a skeleton. Melanie is a bully and taunted Rue when they were teens. Melanie does a little more of that later, but her character is not defined or developed. I wanted to know more about her history and motivations. A later plot segment has Rue and Christoff looking for the "runner," a rogue drakon. That was not developed. I knew nothing about the runner or his motivations. I didn't see him steal anything. Rue is a famous thief, but we don't see her plan or steal anything. Zane was a potentially interesting character, but again not enough was shown about him.

What's the romance about? Rue loved Christoff as a teen but ran away because she didn't think he would love her back. As adults, he says and shows that he wants her as his one true mate, but she continues to avoid the relationship because she believes he does not truly love her. I wanted more relationship development than that.

Sex scenes were there, but nothing memorable. There's a hint of rape in the first scene, but not really. She didn't agree, but she didn't fight. She said "What are you doing?" We weren't in her head to see if she desired sex. He just did it. From her point of view it hurt.

Plot conflicts were not well done. Rue and Christoff are searching for the runner who escaped them earlier. When Rue sees him she sneaks off instead of telling Christoff. I did not understand that. A weak character with no means of defense wants to help and follows the runner without telling anyone. Of course the runner grabs him and uses him as a hostage. These things didn't do anything for me. They felt formulaic.

The story setup was interesting. Drakons are humans who shift into smoke and also into flying dragons. Their mission is to keep their existence secret from humans. They live together in a tribe. If someone leaves the tribe they execute him. Christoff is the strongest drakon and therefore the leader. He must marry the strongest female.

Another reviewer's comment:
I loved the comment by Amazon reviewer Emily Y Teng: "Christoff never made it past that kid in college swaggering around with women leaking out of his ears."

The Smoke Thief The Drakon Book 1 Shana Abé 9780553588040 Books Reviews

This book is one of my all time favorites. I was mystified by the reviewers who blabbed on about rape taking place in this book.
Ive read The Smoke Theif many times - from the hard copy at the library. I tend to reread stories that i love. So this Xmas when i received a happy sum of money I couldn't wait to make it one of my purchases.

Shana Abe beautifully captures the animal alpha nature of these Shifters without making anything horrid, disgusting, or abusive. There are so many writers or erotica who do write stories like that, books that i delete without finishing immediately upon even a hint its heading that way. The Smoke Theif is not that. When i read it this time though i did take careful note that the characters do make reference to "rape or,seduction" in a derisive manner of dialogue. And our male lead does circle back to that conversation in his mind.

I highly recommend this book in particular; however, the whole series is fantastic. I hope to own all of them.

Also- if you liked these books you should check out J.T. Geisinger. I was delighted to find her!
I had picked up this book years and years ago, remembered that I wanted to read this series but couldn't remember much else. Except dragons. I devoured this book in one evening, that's how engrossing it was. I love the world this author created. I adored the romance between Kit and Rue. I'm in love with this series. Definitely. It's not often I read a historical romance, paranormal or not, but I loved this one. Could have used a bit more character development of secondary characters and perhaps dealing more with the prejudices of the Drakon regarding halflings, but perhaps that will come in later books.
They've lived for centuries in secret in northern England's green and misted hills. They are creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality. They can shape shift from human to dragon and back again. Their secret and their survival--is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary.....

The Smoke Thief is a daring thief that is confounding London police. His wealthy victims say the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air.

Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the thief is no ordinary human but a "runner" who's fled Darkfrith without permission. He is alpha leader of the dra'kon, and its his duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But even Kit doesn't suspect that the smoke thief could be a woman.

Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her exploits would attract the attention of the dra'kon. But she didn't expect Christoff himself to come to London. He dangles the tribe's most valuable jewel---the Langdon Diamond---as bait. As long as Clarissa could remember, she has lived life as an outcast---half dra'kon, half mortal. She has always loved Kit from the only place that was safe from afar. She is no longer the shy, timid girl she once was. She is the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. She doesn't understand why she still feels the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he's around.

From the moment Kit saw her, he knew the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. They will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and Clarissa's made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist. Great story.
